Another Fight
by Nathan Herkimer

A vodka bottle was
half empty on my shelf
Above the reach of a child
My chair croaked,
as if it was asking to leave
before the fight began
Rocking back and forward
with my computer in lap
I was clicking away a tune
Painting a story
The fire cracker on the bed,
being drunk all ready
had already collected my discontent

“Grab me the Vodka?”
I asked with a smile
She reached for it
but couldn’t make it
She thought I set her up
The spark that lit the wick
“Little bitch
hidden behind your computer
write a poem about me
what a bitch I am”
she said.

I kept typing
forcing the instrument to play
ignoring the slurs of a drunk
She screeched louder like
fingernails on a chalkboard
or a witch thirsty for youth
and a new beginning
no rhythm, no timing, just madness
She was connecting dots,
dots that she created
Mountains grew right there
out of words I didn’t say
She jumped to an ending
Fast-forwarded through the story
and came to a conclusion from her dots

I stopped typing
No more music from my keyboard
or screams escaping her mouth
Only my yells released from cages in a
an attempt to find a summit she created
It just seemed like the right thing to do
Water sprinted down her cheeks
and jumped toward the floor
my stomach turned over several times
We watched each others eyes
Almost sorry, but not quite
I put away my computer
I didn’t feel like writing a poem.
